BEREA CITY COUNCIL MINUTES OF THE 2026-2028 ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING JANUARY 4, 2026 Council of the City of Berea, Ohio, met for their Organizational Meeting on January 4, 2026, and the meeting was called to order by President of Council Jim Maxwell at 1:30p.m. Present: Erika Coble, Michael A. Kurtz, Chris McManis, Vance Redding, Rick Skoczen and Lisa Weaver, Absent: Gene Zacharyasz. The Pledge of Allegiance followed. This meeting was held in compliance with all legal requirements including Section 121.22 of the Ohio Revised Code and Chapter 109 of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Berea. The certificate of compliance is on file in the Clerk’s office. ELECTION OF PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE Mr. Maxwell opened the floor for nominations for President Pro Tempore. Mr. Redding nominated Mr. McManis, and it was seconded by Mr. Kurtz. Mrs. Coble nominated Mr. Skoczen, and it was seconded by Mr. Redding. Mr. Maxwell asked each Council Member to vote for either Mr. McManis or Mr. Skoczen. Voting for Mr. McManis were: Coble, Kurtz, McManis, Redding, Weaver and Skoczen. Mr. Maxwell declared Mr. McManis the duly elected President Pro Tempore. ELECTION OF CLERK OF COUNCIL Mr. Maxwell opened the floor to nominations for Clerk of Council. Mr. Skoczen nominated Alycia Esson, and the motion was seconded by Mr. McManis. Vote on the motion was all ayes and no nays. The motion carried and Mr. Maxwell welcomed Mrs. Esson back as Clerk of Council. COUNCIL COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS Mr. Maxwell announced his appointments to the following Council Committees: Building and Zoning: Gene Zacharyasz, Chair; Coble and Skoczen Coordinating: Jim Maxwell, Chair; All Members of Council Court: Chris McManis, Chair; Kurtz and Zacharyasz Economic Development: Chris McManis, Chair; Skoczen and Zacharyasz Facilities: Lisa Weaver, Chair; Coble and Redding Finance: Rick Skoczen, Chair; McManis and Zacharyasz Public Safety & Service: Vance Redding, Chair; Skoczen and Weaver 2 2026-2028 Organizational Meeting – January 4, 2026 Senior & Community Services: Erika Coble, Chair; Redding and Weaver Utilities: Michael A. Kurtz, Chair; Weaver and Zacharyasz ADDITIONAL APPOINTMENTS Mr. Maxwell announced the following additional appointments: Southwest Health Care System Board of Directors: Chris McManis Shade Tree Commission: Erika Coble and Gene Zacharyasz Woodvale Union Cemetery Board of Trustees: Jim Maxwell Southwest Suburban Council of Governments: Rick Skoczen; Chris McManis, Alternate Community Reinvestment Area Housing Council: Erika Coble and Lisa Weaver Mayor’s Ad Hoc Water Rates Committee: Kurtz, Maxwell, McManis, & Skoczen NEW BUSINESS: Mr. Maxwell encouraged all members to familiarize themselves with the Ohio Sunshine Laws for open meetings. There being no further business before Council, it was moved by Mr. McManis, seconded by Mr. Skoczen, that Council’s Organizational Meeting be adjourned. Vote on the motion was all ayes and no nays.
