                                  MINUTES OF COUNCIL 

                                    Monday, May 13, 2024 


Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance The regular meeting of Brunswick City Council was called to order by 
Mayor Ron Falconi at 7:00 p.m. at the Municipal Complex. 

Roll Call of Members showed the following Council Members present: Nicholas Hanek, Brandon Lambert, 
Michael Abella Jr., Keith Kuczma, Joseph Delsanter, Tim Smith, Kristy Piper. 

Others Present: Mayor Ron Falconi, City Manager/Safety Director Carl DeForest, Law Director Dennis Nevar, 
Clerk of Council Laura Timura. 

Correspondence  There was none. 

Approval of Regular Council Meeting Minutes dated April 22, 2024. Nicholas Hanek moved to approve the 
Regular Council Meeting Minutes dated April 22, 2024, as written, seconded by Kristy Piper. Roll Call - Ayes -
7, Nicholas Hanek, Brandon Lambert, Michael Abella Jr., Keith Kuczma, Joseph Delsanter, Tim Smith, Kristy 
Piper. Nays - 0. Motion Carried. 

Mayor's Report: 
The Mayor's Court Financial Report for the month ending, April 2024 will be posted on the website and 
added to the minutes for the record. 

Proclamation in recognition of Gold Award recipient Jodie Hellickson: 

Mayor Falconi presented a proclamation to Jodie Hellickson to recognize her completion of the Girl Scout 
Gold Award. 
Proclamation in recognition of Eagle Scout Austin Kennedy: 

Boy Scout Austin Kennedy was presented with a proclamation in recognition of his achievement of the Eagle 
Scout rank. 
Proclamation in recognition of Safety Month: 

Chief Building Inspector James Urankar announced that May is Safety Month. This month recognizes the 
importance of building safety and celebrates the individuals and organizations dedicated to upholding the 
highest standards of safety throughout the entire community. He expressed gratitude to all those who 
contributed to making the City a safe place to tive, work, and thrive. Mayor Falconi then presented a 
proclamation recognizing May as Safety Month. 
Proclamation in recognition of Buddy Poppy Days: 

A representative from the Veterans of Foreign Wars stated that the Buddy Poppy Drive will be held on May 
24 and 25 at Giant Eagle and Drug Mart on Route 303. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year to support 
fallen veterans and their families. Mayor Falconi then presented a proclamation in recognition of Buddy 
Poppy Days.

Mayor's recommendation to reappoint Hope Zakany and Jesse Knight to the Juvenile Diversion Board:

City Manager's Report Mr. DeForest relayed that there will be a Memorial Day ceremony and parade at 
Brunswick Middle School commencing at 9 a.m. on May 27. Those wishing to get involved can contact Pat 
Finn (216) 272-4361. 

The Fishing Derby has been rescheduled due to the weather. Members of the Rotary Club were at Brunswick 
Lake to gather trash. Seven trash bags were filled with the majority of the trash from the shoreline. 

Mr. DeForest offered his thoughts and prayers to the family of Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin who was 
murdered in the line of duty at the age of 23. He was an army veteran. The City will fly flags at half staff 
until his funeral on Saturday. 
Open Forum   James Evanoff (3649 Ascot Drive) encouraged the City to continue to combat the interchange 
on Boston Road. He offered his support to stop the interchange which is bad for the City. 

Sherri Hamm (15728 Boston Road) thanked everyone who testified in Columbus. She pointed out that 
neither the Mayor of Strongsville nor the Ward Councilman had contacted her regarding the interchange and 
the potential loss of her home. She thanked Brunswick City Council for supporting Strongsville residents who 
would be affected by the proposed interchange. 
Unfinished Business Mr. Smith informed that the Fishing Derby was postponed to Saturday, May 18, due to 
the rain. The event is sponsored by the Brunswick Optimist Club and there are many prizes that will be given. 
The Fishing Derby will run from 8:30-11:00 a.m. Those who are 16 years of age and younger are encouraged 
to participate.

  Mr. Hanek revealed that Resolution Number 53A2024 pertained to funding Phase 3 of the Plum Creek 
  Greenway.  He explained that this phase will extend the current Plum Creek trail from Laurel Road up into 
  Brunswick Lake. This project has been ongoing for several years with a lot of effort from community 
  partners, the administration, Medina County Parks District, Brunswick City Schools, Grace Baptist Church, 
  Home Owner's Associations, and members of the community. They all collaborated to build a tremendous 
  community resource. Mr. Hanek relayed that he is excited to see this huge project come to fruition for the 
  City. He expressed that he was proud and honored to be a part of the project.
