Case Western Reserve Investing $4M to Modernize Its Freshman Dorm

A $4 million permit filed for Sherman House on Euclid Avenue will bring pod-style restrooms and renovated social spaces to CWRU's first-year housing building.
Case Western Reserve University has filed a $4 million renovation permit for Sherman House, a four-story first-year residence hall at 10900 Euclid Avenue. The project, filed April 8, 2026, covers two scopes: upgraded social spaces on the ground floor and a full conversion of upper-floor restrooms to pod-style bathrooms.
Pod-style restrooms — individual lockable rooms each containing a toilet, sink, and shower — have become a standard in new student housing construction as universities compete for enrollment and respond to student demand for privacy. Converting existing gang-style bathrooms to pod configuration typically requires significant plumbing relocation and floor reconstruction, which accounts for the project's scale.
CWRU's Euclid Avenue corridor has been a consistent investment zone over the past decade, with the university expanding its footprint in University Circle. Sherman House was built in an era when dormitory design prioritized efficiency over comfort; this renovation brings its bathrooms and common areas up to contemporary standards.
The permit is listed as Awaiting Plans. HEWV is the project's architectural representative.
